Uig crofter Jamie Dobson is the Liberal Democrat candidate for the forthcoming General Election. Formerly a Chartered Engineer in nuclear submarines and then director of a safety consultancy, Jamie is an elder in the Church of Scotland. He has degrees in Theology and Mechanical Engineering. He has served as Treasurer of the Uig Development Trust, is a crofter and grazings clerk.
Jamie believes LibDem policies offer the best plan for reversing the existential decline in the population, though investing in opportunities from wind power, hydrogen manufacture, satellite and fast fibre communications, fishing and managed tourism and by welcoming working asylum seekers who have been awaiting their decisions for more than three months. He believes that all attempts to weaken the Human Rights Act must be resisted.
He is passionate about developing localism, giving complete budgetary responsibility, including for crofter-led peat restoration and achieving net-zero, to CnES, and delegating power and responsibility to local communities.
Scotland should be a robust, autonomous, self-governing country, within a strong United Kingdom. The Conservatives’ cuts to the Armed Forces should be reversed and Britain’s membership of NATO should be strengthened and promoted, with the UK maintaining its nuclear defence posture of continuous at-sea deterrence.
